Trolling textbooks with Sherlock.

Um. Wait.

I feel like there’s something wrong with this guy.

Holy. Crap.
um so I’ve been seeing some people using gifs such as these:
to express FML sentiments. Such as, my cat just vomited on my bed. My printer won’t cooperate and I need to turn in this paper. The -blank- livestream just conked out. I’ve locked myself outside of my house in the cold and there won’t be anyone around to let me in for another 6 hours.
I do care about the shit that happens in your life, no matter how boring or how fucking shitty some of it is (THAT LAST EXAMPLE WOULD EARN ALL OF MY SYMPATHY); this is a blog place for blogging about life and mundane shit and how gross you may feel, et cetera et cetera. It’s your right to complain about anything; we’re here to listen and support, no matter how small the issue.
But. Suicide. No. Not ok. Not a jokey reaction gif. Mm mm. Not at all.
It shakes me to the bone to see those things, due to something very traumatic and very real that happened in my life. I’m ok with seeing this sort of thing when it’s seen in a serious, emotional context (such as in the actual episode of Reichenbach, or in angsty/beautiful graphics); in those situations, it’s supposed to be traumatizing in a way, and I’m more or less prepared for it.
But these willy-nilly whatsits… they’re jolting. Really triggering, I guess is the word. So, yes. Please refrain.
Thank you so much for putting the subject into better words than I could. I’ve been trying to get this message out to whoever would listen for a while, because I have a serious problem seeing it too.
It’s a little easier to see when it’s in graphics and stuff because it has an intelligent, thought-out reason to be there. But as a reaction gif, it is jarring, insensitive, disrespectful, and absolutely pointless. I, too, was “out of commission” for several days after seeing the episode just because of that scene, and though it’s gotten better enough that I can think about it without freaking out, this will never be okay.
I will post about this until people listen. I know that in the long run, it’s not a big deal. But, guys. Just. Please. Suicide is not something to minimalize or joke about. Even if it’s portrayed in fiction, that doesn’t stop it from becoming a trigger to certain people (me, my friend, and the original poster of this included) and that doesn’t stop it being insensitive.
Just choose a different “fml” gif next time. There is literally no need to use suicide in a reaction gif. You can get your point across some other way.

There is definitely some biblical references going on with the IOU quote.
Putting aside the whole reference to siding with the angels, the fact that Moriarty writes on an apple (and the big O looking like a bite) is reminiscent of the story of Eden.
And the line ‘I owe you a fall’ harkens to the idea of the fall of man (fruit of the tree) and of the fallen angel (demons).
Plus the graffiti is red like the apple with black wings.
And the whole ‘burning’ metaphor.
‘Falling is just like flying’ just with a more permanent destination. Again an angel reference.
idk
I did notice that the episode was awfully centered on the whole angel/devil thing, and just generally had that feel.
There’s also a line going around the fandom: “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled convincing the world he did not exist.” Very accurate, and possibly was an intentional thing in the episode to make Moriarty seem like the devil in that way.
Could also just be that “The Final Problem” was very-Good-vs.-Evil, and the writer wanted to emphasize that as much as possible.
Interesting observations up there.
